Syringe Exchange

Using a mobile outreach vehicle, the Syringe Exchange Program (SEP) provides new syringes in exchange for used ones for over 18,000 registered participants at six weekly exchange sites, and exchanges over 1.4 million syringes annually. Exchange participants can access information and develop strategies for reducing their risk of HIV, hepatitis and other drug-related harm. Confidential HIV and Hepatitis C screening and counseling, harm reduction education, overdose prevention, and referrals for drug treatment, medical care, and social services are provided at each site.

In addition to exchanging syringes, the SEP also offers:

  • Confidential HIV testing and counseling
  • Hepatitis C screening
  • Opiate overdose prevention trainings with naloxone distribution
  • Harm reduction education
  • Referrals to drug treatment
  • Medical care
  • Referrals to legal services
  • Linkage to case management
  • Linkage to public assistance and medical assistance
  • Information and strategies for reducing risks from contracting HIV, hepatitis, safer injection techniques
