In honor of Black History Month (BHM), we’re featuring some of the Black leaders of harm reduction here at Prevention Point Philadelphia (PPP). On the final day of BHM 2025, we are proud to feature Desmond Doyley, affectionately known as “Dez” by his colleagues. Dez is the Prevention Healthcare Team Lead, running the daily operations for the PrEP, testing, and hepatitis C clinics. Dez ensures that patients attend appointments on their scheduled dates, and acts as a liaison between patients and PPP's medical providers. He also connects patients to other medical and social programs such as housing, primary care, and reentry services.

Even after six years working at PPP, Dez says that every day is different and brings new opportunities to connect with the people we serve.

“I love the fact that I get to help people who often aren’t completely happy with themselves,” Dez says. “I get to help them feel a bit more hopeful with each conversation. Once the building is closed, I know the participants have a whole other life. I can only fathom as to what they have to endure. Each time I meet with them I try to give them some optimism. A simple conversation can go a long way.”

Dez describes his leadership style as laid-back, but very supportive and intentional.

“I allow the team a lot of independence. I watch and assess and if I think they need assistance, I pop in to help,” he explains. “If I feel like someone on the team is in a difficult mental space, I tell them to take it easy. I got you.”

Desmond’s colleagues describe him as thoughtful, supportive, flexible, innovative, and empathetic—all qualities that are deeply appreciated in PPP’s fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.

Dez works in harm reduction because he is committed to empowering people to stay as safe and healthy as possible, even and especially if they are engaging in risky behavior such as injection drug use.

“Harm reduction is the start of having a good life. I tell participants to put themselves first—harm reduction starts with them.”
